Celebrating Excellence: Vanessa Cao Receives the Emory L. Cowen Award

02 Feb 2026

Children’s Institute is proud to recognize Vanessa Cao, the recent recipient of the Emory Cowen Award for the Best-Authored First Publication in a Psychology Journal. This distinguished award honors emerging scholars who demonstrate exceptional promise in the field of psychology.

For Children’s Institute, this recognition holds special meaning. Emory L. Cowen, a pioneering community psychologist, founded the Primary Mental Health Project (PMHP) in 1957—what we now know as Primary Project. His groundbreaking work laid the foundation for school‑based prevention and early intervention efforts that continue to support young children today. Vanessa’s achievement reflects a continuation of Dr. Cowen’s legacy, exemplifying the spirit of innovation, prevention, and child well‑being that still defines our work nearly seven decades later.

Vanessa is a valued member of the Children’s Institute Data & Science Team, where she plays a key role in a current research study examining the impact of Primary Project pre‑K programs. She collaborates directly with school partners to ensure high‑quality research practices across all participating sites. Her thoughtful approach to data collection, communication, and relationship‑building has strengthened partnerships with educators and supported countless children and families throughout the school year.

Vanessa’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to evidence‑based work embody the values of Children’s Institute. We are grateful for her contributions and thrilled to celebrate this well‑deserved honor.

Congratulations, Vanessa! And thank you for advancing the legacy of Emory L. Cowen through your outstanding work.
