Outdoor Play: An Essential Part of Child Development

Outdoor Play: An Essential Part of Child Development

06 Apr 2026

Outdoor play is a big part of how young children grow and learn. When children are outside, they have the space and freedom to really move including running, climbing, balancing, and exploring in ways that aren’t possible indoors. That kind of movement not only builds strong bodies, but it also builds confidence and resilience by helping children learn what they can do, how to take small risks, and bounce back when things don’t go perfectly. Plus, being outside (in most weather!) gives kids a chance to reset emotionally. Fresh air, open space, and hands-on experiences can help children feel calmer, happier, and more regulated.

When outdoor play is restricted, we start to see the opposite effects. Kids may become unsure of their bodies or even develop a fear of movement because they haven’t had enough chances to practice. It becomes easy for more sedentary activities to take over, which can impact both physical health and confidence over time. For educators and parents, making outdoor play a regular part of the day regardless of weather, can make a powerful difference in a child’s overall development and well-being.
