Primary Project Proud at PS/MS 20 in New York City

09 Jan 2025

When PS/MS 20 in the Norwood section of the Bronx applied for funding to begin a Primary Project program in the winter of 2020, they had no idea that the entire city would soon shut down due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, when school reopened the following year, the Primary Project team was full steam ahead! The team includes School Social Worker Christopher Bates, MSW and bilingual Child Associate Maria Nunez. Mr. Bates and Ms. Nunez work alongside Principal Michael Pontebbi, who has offered unwavering support for Primary Project playroom space, training, and implementation. The school was awarded National Certification status in the spring of 2023, demonstrating a commitment to Primary Project best practices.

Since being awarded National Certification, Mr. Bates and Ms. Nunez have gone above and beyond to support training efforts of new schools in the New York City and lower Westchester area by joining our new programs to role play real life playroom scenarios. Additionally, their door is always open to new programs who learn so much from visiting the school to see Primary Project in action.

Below, Chris shares why he is Primary Project Proud:

PS/MS20

One of my proudest moments in Primary Project has been witnessing the impact of our AMAZING Child Associate, Ms. Maria Nunez. Ms. Nunez is a dedicated and passionate Child Associate within the Primary Project program, where she plays an essential role in supporting young students as they navigate their school environment. Ms. Nunez helps our students develop critical social and independent skills that are vital for their success in school and beyond. With a focus on fostering healthy peer relationships, Ms. Nunez creates a safe space for her students to explore their emotions, learn how to communicate effectively, and build positive connections with their classmates. Ms. Nunez's dedication and nurturing approach have made a lasting impact on the students she works with, and we are grateful for her commitment to their growth and well-being. Her efforts truly help set the foundation for a bright future for every student she supports!

Chris also shared his favorite part of implementing Primary Project at PS/MS 20:

My favorite part of implementing Primary Project is being able to support our students in overcoming challenges, building self-esteem, and learning how to be independent while navigating the complex world of friendships and peer interactions. The lasting impact that is made is what truly lets us know that we are doing the right thing!
