Primary Project Proud in the Watertown City School District

09 Dec 2024

In the fall of 2023, the Watertown City School District, located in Watertown, New York, was awarded funding through a competitive three-year grant administered by Children’s Institute and supported by NYSED. The district began their Primary Project program with an impressive 12 pre-K sites, serving as many as 40 students a year. The Watertown team also signed on to Children’s Institute’s 3-year research study to better understand the effectiveness of the pre-K components of Primary Project.

Below, Administrator Beth Maurer explains why she is Primary Project Proud by honoring the program’s child associate, Karie Fitzgerald:

“One of my proudest moments in Primary Project has been witnessing the impact of our exceptional Child Associate, Karie Fitzgerald, whose dedication and meticulous attention to detail have elevated the program in every way. Her commitment to ensuring that each part of the program operates smoothly has been instrumental, particularly as we participate in a research study where accuracy and consistency are paramount. She is diligent in making sure every “i” is dotted and every “t” crossed, which will contribute significantly to the research team’s success.

Beyond her organizational skills, her interactions with the children in the playroom stand out as a true example of excellence. She builds trust and provides a safe, engaging environment, fostering relationships that allow each child to feel supported and understood. Her communication with teachers and families strengthens the web of support around each child, ensuring that everyone involved feels informed and empowered to help the children succeed. Her dedication and passion make me proud to be part of this program and grateful for her invaluable contributions.”

Beth further explains how Primary Project has been instrumental in supporting students in the Watertown pre-K program:

“My favorite part of implementing Primary Project is watching students develop confidence and grow into their unique strengths. Seeing each child become more self-assured and capable of sharing their gifts with the world is incredibly rewarding. This growth is also noticed and appreciated by their teachers and families, who can clearly see the positive changes in behavior and self-expression. One of the most fulfilling aspects is hearing from families who not only celebrate these successes, but also share them with others, spreading the impact of our program beyond the school community.”

Since joining the Primary Project community, the district has begun to expand to other elementary schools in the district, including North Elementary School.
