Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilation Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks the official freeing of enslaved people on June 19, 1865. On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Throughout history and into the 21st-century celebrations have included prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals.
